Starbucks To Update iOS App With New Design, Digital Tipping And 'Shake To Pay'
March 12, 2014
Starbucks is set to release a significant update to its official app for iOS.
According to the world's largest coffeehouse company, its namesake iOS app will be updated a week from now with a new iOS 7-inspired design, quick access to card information, and, perhaps most notably, a new digital tipping feature:
Beginning March 19, customers using Starbucks App for iPhone in the U.S., U.K. and Canada will experience a streamlined design and easy access to their account and My Starbucks Rewards information. In addition, customers using the app will have the option to leave a tip at more than 7,000 company-operated Starbucks stores in the U.S.Apparently a much requested feature, digital tipping will let you tip your baristas directly from the Starbucks app, rather than dropping some dough into the tip jar. Note, though, that whereas you can tip any amount you want IRL, you can digitally tip in $0.50, $1 and $2 denominations only. Aside from digital tipping, another noteworthy Starbucks app feature that's set to arrive next week is "Shake to Pay." With Shake to Pay, you can simply shake your iOS device to automatically display the barcode of your Starbucks Card, thereby saving your fingers a trip to the Passbook app. As mentioned, these enhancements will be launched in the Starbucks app through an update on Wednesday, March 19. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch, Starbucks is available for free in the App Store.
