Cydia Tweak: LSStepCount Usefully Adds A Pedometer To The iOS Lock Screen

May 19, 2014

LSStepCount is a recently released jailbreak tweak (that’s currently in beta) which can add a step count to both the iOS Lock screen and the iOS status bar. You can download the package free of charge now, and it’s optimized for iOS 7 and ARM64-devices.

Apple added a motion-tracking M7 coprocessor to the iPhone with its iPhone 5s, but Cupertino has yet to bring an intuitive means of accessing this information to its mobile operating system. Reports have indicated that Healthbook, a Passbook-style app for health and fitness-related data, could be Apple’s answer to this problem, but until then LSStepCount can help.

The jailbreak tweak can be downloaded free of charge now, and as mentioned, it’s presently in beta form. LSStepCount makes two main changes to Apple’s iOS: first, it adds a step count to the Lock screen; second, it adds a step count to the iOS status bar.

Both can be enabled or disabled from inside a dedicated preferences pane that LSStepCount adds to the Settings app, and in order to get the jailbreak tweak up and running, users are also advised to manually reboot their iOS device after installing the package.

Though the appearance of the Lock screen component is a little basic, LSStepCount indeed works well: data updates as users make further steps, and as such the package provides a smart way for users to gain at-a-glance information on their daily activity.

Now, for the small print: LSStepCount indeed installs a new preferences pane in the Settings app, but it also installs an actual iOS application on users’ iOS devices, too (which is required in order for the jailbreak tweak to function). “This app is not for your interest, it does nothing for you,” the developer explains at Reddit, and as such jailbreakers are going to want to hide this app icon away in a folder and forget about it.

The other crucial piece of information prospective users need to know is that a beta repository will need to be added to your list of “Sources” in the Cydia app in order for LSStepCount to be downloaded and installed. The repository’s address is:

As mentioned, LSStepCount can be downloaded free of charge from the above repository. Do remember that it’s indeed a beta package, and as such you may encounter quirks with the software. However, LSStepCount worked reliably and accurately during our testing.
