Foxconn To Start Production On Apple's 5.5-Inch 'iPhone 6' In August
May 27, 2014
Apple and its suppliers are finalizing plans for production on the “iPhone 6.” Once again, Foxconn is expected to receive the bulk of the orders, according to a report from DigiTimes.
Assembly on the rumored 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model will be shared between Foxconn (70 percent) and Pegatron (30 percent). Production on the long-rumored 5.5-inch model, however, will be handled entirely by Foxconn.
Meanwhile, Wistron will complete orders for a 4-inch iPhone. This means either the iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c will live on into 2015 and replace the iPhone 4s as Apple’s low-cost handset.
DigiTimes says the majority of the new iPhones produced in 2014 will be the 4- and 4.7-inch varieties. This suggests the 5.5-inch model could be in short supply, at least initially.
Foxconn's plants in China are expected to start supplying the 4.7-inch model in July and start manufacturing the 5.5-inch one in August.
Though DigiTimes isn't always the best source for Apple news, the content presented here matches that of previous reports.
The next iPhone is expected to feature a thinner design, a sapphire-coated display, an enhanced camera, and an “Apple A8” processor. It’ll be powered by iOS 8, the next-generation iteration of Apple’s mobile OS, and key features could include side-by-side multitasking (for the iPad) and a dedicated “Healthbook” health and fitness app.
