'Netflix For Books' App Oyster Updated With New Features And Enhancements

June 17, 2014
Oyster, the official iOS app of the "Netflix for books" service of the same name, has just received another major update. Coinciding with the launch of Oyster for Android, the arrival of the latest update to Oyster for iOS sees the introduction of a number of new features and enhancements. There's the redesigned book detail pages, which include a color palette that adapts complementarily to the cover imagery and more related titles and recommended sets for improved discovery of good reads. Editor's notes have also been added to top titles. According to the Oyster team:
We’ve also added editor’s notes to hundreds of our top titles so you can get short, thoughtful reviews of the books we love (or don’t). Between 100 and 300 characters, these notes are there to help you make a choice about your next book as quickly as possible. This all comes from our growing editorial team–from Huffington Post, The New Yorker, NPR, The Paris Review, Poets & Writers, and more.
There's also a new "read time" feature that, as its name suggests, indicates the approximate time it takes to read a book. The latest update to Oyster also brings enhancements to the e-reading app's themes, including new typography, a refreshed color palette, and other UI tweaks. What's more, there's a new theme called Wythe, featuring a high-contrast style and a news-text font ideal for outdoor reading. Also, all themes have been made available in night mode. The update also delivers various bug fixes and performance improvements. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later, Oyster is available on the App Store for free. Oyster offers unlimited access to its library of more than 500,000 e-books from leading publishers for $9.95 a month. Released for iPhone and iPod touch in September last year, Oyster was updated with universal support for iPad and iPad mini in October.
