Iconic industrial designer Marc Newson to join close friend Jony Ive at Apple

September 6, 2014

Marc Newson is joining Jony Ive at Apple.

According to a new report by VF Daily, the renowned industrial designer has been hired by Apple as part of the team headed by the company’s design chief, who happens to be his longtime friend and collaborator.

Most notably, Newson and Ive teamed up last year for a charity auction for the benefit of U2 frontman Bono’s Product (RED). The auction featured various items curated by Newson and Ive, including a couple of special-edition Apple products they co-designed, namely, a red Mac Pro and a pair of solid rose gold Apple EarPods.

VF Daily shares the following statements from the design duo:

“Marc is without question one of the most influential designers of this generation,” Ive said in a statement provided to VF Daily. “He is extraordinarily talented. We are particularly excited to formalize our collaboration as we enjoy working together so much and have found our partnership so effective.”

“I’m full of admiration and respect for the extraordinary design work that has been produced by Jony and the team at Apple,” Newson said. “My close friendship with Jony has not only given me a unique insight into that process, but the opportunity to work together with him and the people that have been responsible. I am enormously proud to join them.”

Newson will remain based in the U.K. and will continue to work on projects other than Apple’s. But as an official colleague of Ive’s, he will be making frequent visits to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Given his previous work on a wide range of projects including timepieces, Newson is expected to be at least involved in the development of Apple’s “iWatch.” But Apple declined to comment when asked if he would work on the long-rumored wearable device, which the company is said to unveil along with the “iPhone 6″ at its special media event on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
