Viber finally gains support for video calling on iOS as it gets updated to version 5.0
Viber, the popular messaging app acquired by Rakuten for $900 million earlier this year, has just been updated with new features, including one that has been a long time coming.
Released back in December 2010, Viber was updated to version 3.0 in May last year with support for the then newly launched Viber for desktop, which introduced video calling to the service.
Viber was updated to version 4.0 in November with a sticker market, push-to-talk messaging, and other features, but still no video calling on iOS.
Well, Viber 5.0 is here, and it finally brings support for video calling on iOS, in addition to audio calling and instant messaging, of course. It even lets you transfer video calls between your iOS device and your Mac or PC running Viber for desktop. Just tap the call button when viewing a contact or a chatroom and select the video call or call transfer option.
Viber 5.0 also lets you add friends using their Viber numbers or QR codes, manage sticker packs, and easily forward photo and video messages.
Viber for desktop, which is also free, is available to download directly from Viber’s website.
