Google-owned Nest acquires smart home hub maker Revolv
Nest is continuing to make waves in the smart home space. After purchasing surveillance camera maker Dropcam earlier this year, the Google-owned company has just acquired the Revolv smart home hub.
Specifics of the deal were not announced. But as part of the purchase, Revolv will no longer sell its smart home hub as the team behind it will work with Nest on new products.
Customers who have already purchased the Revolv hub will continue to receive support. All Revolv data will remain separate from Google.
The hub, which retailed for $299, was designed to unify the numerous smart home devices under one companion iOS app. The seven different radios in the hub could speak popular protocols like Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and more.
Apple is also interested in the smart home space on both the software and hardware levels. HomeKit, which debuted with iOS 8, will allow a number of third-party devices to integrate with an iPhone or iPad. Earlier this year, Apple was reportedly exploring their own smart products as well.
Competitor Samsung made a play into the space by purchasing SmartThings in August.
