Release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus led to record accessory sales
Powered by the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, mobile accessories sales in the United States reached record levels.
In the two weeks after Apple’s handsets were launched, sales peaked at $249 million. That’s 43 percent higher than during the previous two-week period. The new data comes from tracking firm NPD Group.
For comparison, accessory sales after the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were $195 million. It was only a 17 percent increase before the two weeks before the launch.
Unsurprisingly, revenue from the sales of screen protectors and cases increased dramatically compared to before the launch. Screen protector revenue was up 120 percent while case revenue increased 78 percent.
Even other accessory categories, including headphones with microphones, Bluetooth speakers, and mobile power products saw an increase after launch.
In a recent survey by the firm, 58 percent of iPhone buyers purchase accessories after leaving the store. So that definitely leaves room for even more growth, especially with the holiday shopping season on deck.
