Google News & Weather for iOS updated with Today widget for top headlines

November 5, 2014

Google has just issued the first update to its recently released news and weather app for iOS.

In her original review of the app, my colleague Christine praised the aptly named Google News & Weather. “The layout is uncomplicated, the font is legible, the data is accurate, and there’s a ton of content to go through as the day goes by,” she wrote.

However, she expressed her disappointment in discovering a notable omission, saying, “I just wish that the app had a Today widget available for weather and top headlines, as that could come in handy.”

Well, the first update to Google News & Weather is likely to delight her and many other users in that regard. That’s because the update adds support for the app’s own Today widget, which offers access to several top headlines (weather forecast not included at this point) right from the Notification Center in iOS 8.

Tapping any of the headlines in the Today widget opens the corresponding full article in the Google News & Weather app. There’s also a link in the widget to see “More news stories.”

The new version of Google News & Weather also includes some bug fixes.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later, Google News & Weather is available on the App Store for free.
