Opera Mini 9.0 features video boost for reducing buffering time and cellular data bills

November 6, 2014

Opera has just updated its popular mobile web browser, Opera Mini, to version 9.0 with a new feature called video boost.

Touted as the first video optimization technology integrated into a Web browser, video boost in Opera Mini 9.0 reduces the size of video data to bring down video-buffering time as well as users’ cellular data bills.

Video boost may be enabled as part of Opera Turbo mode, which can be turned on in the Data Savings section under Opera Mini’s “O” menu. Here the number of videos that have been optimized by video boost is also shown.

Aside from the video-boosting Opera Turbo mode, which performs some compression while maintaining website compatibility, Opera Mini features full-on Opera Mini mode, which compresses data to as little as 10 percent of the original data size, and “no data savings” mode, which offers no compression and full website compatibility.

Opera Mini 9.0 is available now on the App Store for free. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later.

The newly updated app also features native resolution support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, new options for editing Speed Dial website shortcuts, and a revamped data-savings gauge.

Opera also offers Opera Coast, a universal iOS Web browser with a focus on gestures and animations.
