Weather Underground 5.0 adds a brand new design plus Apple Watch support

The World Around You
April 21, 2015

Weather Underground, known affectionately among its user base as “wunderground,” has received an impressive update adding a brand new design, alongside a selection of new features, to the iOS application.

Optimized for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and available on the App Store free of charge, the popular Weather Underground provides iOS device owners with weather forecasts sourced from local weather stations which are displayed inside the app. Because of this, users will find that the reports featured in Weather Underground are often more reliable than those offered by the likes of Apple’s own Weather app for iOS, and as such Weather Underground has been my go-to weather application for some time (especially since the app received an update not long ago adding a handy “Today” widget for Notification Center).

Though the previous user interface (UI) for Weather Underground had felt a little tired, the app’s 5.0 update fixes this problem and indeed introduces a brand new, more elegant, yet all-round more fully featured design for the application. There are more charts in the app, too, and an interactive radar slider allows users to “travel through time” and check on future forecasts inside of Weather Underground. It’s also possible to pinpoint any location for weather reports as of the 5.0 update, “because sometimes you want the weather for a specific Burning Man tent, not the Black Rock city center,” the app’s release notes explain.

Last, but by no means least, Weather Underground has added support for the Apple Watch, providing its users with “all the power of the WU app, right from your wrist!” Here’s a complete list of features added in the app’s 5.0 release:

  • Refined new design, now available on every imaginable size of glowing rectangle.
  • Apple Watch support – all the power of the WU app, right from your wrist!
  • Better graphs, more charts, and a weird petri-dish thing for flu risk.
  • Travel through time using only your finger with the new interactive radar slider.
  • Pinpoint any location, because sometimes you want the weather for a specific Burning Man tent, not the Black Rock city center.

I’ve really enjoyed using the 5.0 release of Weather Underground these past few hours: it’s a great look for the app, and something I’m pleased to see launch. Apple Watch support is, of course, a real boon, and I’m excited to check out Weather Underground on the Watch OS as soon as my smartwatch arrives.

Weather Underground is available on the App Store free of charge, and it’s optimized for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.
