While the Apple Watch is a fabulous activity tracker, there’s one place it can’t go – the water. And to help fill that void, Misfit and Speedo have just announced a new device designed specifically for swimmers.
The lap of luxury
The new Speedo Shine features proprietary lap algorithms that will help swimmers keep track of their laps. It works with all types of strokes, and can sync with the companion Misfit app to display laps, swim distance, and calories burned. It will also work with Speedo’s swim tracking app – Speedo Fit – in the near future.
Just like Misfit’s original Shine tracker, the Speedo edition is made with aircraft-grade aluminum and comes in a new light silver color. It’s waterproof to 50 meters and can also track other activity like walking, running, and cycling. With the device, users can also keep tabs on their sleep patterns.
Thanks to a coin cell battery, you won’t need to constantly charge the device. The battery needs to be replaced after about six months of normal usage.
The tracker will retail for $79.99 and be available starting on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at your local Apple Store. It will also be available online from Misfit and Speedo. Along with a tracker, the package will come with a white or black sports band.
I’ve been a big fan of Misfit’s products, and the company is doing a great job offering well-designed dedicated activity trackers that provide an inexpensive alternative to the Apple Watch. The new Shine should definitely be a great way for swimmers to get an accurate overview of their activity in the water.
I’ve done a bit of swimming, and am looking forward to trying the tracker out. And hey, it’s definitely one Speedo I wouldn’t be embarrassed wearing to the pool.
