YouTube Music arrives for the iPhone with a big focus on discovery

Music
November 12, 2015

First announced back in October, YouTube has officially unveiled its YouTube Music app for the iPhone.

Discovering new music

The app does a nice job offering personalized recommendations.

After downloading the app, you’ll quickly be taken to a personalized homescreen based on previous videos viewed on YouTube. When watching a video, you can also launch a personalized station depending on the artist or song.

Liking specific music will help the app offer better recommendations that align to your taste. It’s also quick and easy to search for any type of music.

Wrapup

Designed for the iPhone/iPod touch, YouTube Music can be downloaded now on the App Store for free.

If you’re a member of the recently-launched YouTube Red subscription service, you’ll receive a number of perks. Along with being able to watch all the videos without any ads, you can listen to music offline and select between a video or just audio of a song. Finally, users will be able to hear any video play, even when they are in another app or the screen is turned off.

A membership costs $9.99 per month or $12.99 monthly if you pay through the App Store.

Anyone who downloads the new music app will receive a free, 14-day trial to YouTube Red.

With so much music content on YouTube, a dedicated app definitely makes a lot of sense. But it will interesting to see if it can gain traction and help boost YouTube Red’s subscription numbers.
