Fresco’s citizen journalism app is a great addition to the Apple TV

If you’re a news junkie or ever wanted to become a citizen journalist, Fresco should definitely be up your alley. Originally landing on the iPhone back in 2014, the app allows users to capture and upload images and videos from breaking news events all around the world.

Unlike other citizen journalism projects, there are two big differences with Fresco.

If any news organization uses your photo or video, you will receive a payment. And Fresco also curates what users can view in the app. That helps to make all of the video high quality and interesting to view.

Power to the people

The contributed videos look great on the Apple TV.

And the service has recently made the move to the Apple TV with the aptly named Fresco TV app. The app is a great way to showcase all of the different videos and photos being captured by users.

After starting the app, you can select from three sections – Video, Highlights, and Stories. In the Video section, you can watch different videos selected by Fresco. In Highlights, you’ll be able to scroll through some of today’s top news.

Interestingly, the Stories tab shows all the video and images submitted regarding a certain topic – like the the recent Winter Storm Jonas that paralyzed the northeast with a record amount of snowfall.

Wrap-up

Even though I was just able to spend a few minutes with Fresco’s Apple TV app, I definitely came away impressed. The app was easy to navigate, and the videos and images looked nice on the big screen.

The Fresco TV app for the Apple TV is available to download now for free on the tvOS App Store. Just search for “Fresco TV.”

If you’re interested, the Fresco iPhone app can also be downloaded now on the App Store for free. Apple Watch users can even take advantage of the app on the wearable device to get updated on all the latest news. Here’s an interactive preview from our sister site WatchAware.
