The Best News Apps For News Junkies

When you’re on the go, your iPhone is never far from your hand. Whether it be breaking news, sports, the latest technology rumors, or getting all of your social updates in one place, these are the best news apps keep you in the loop.

National News

Like reading the paper, only on your iOS device. Stay in tune with the best in journalism with these apps.

NYTimes – Breaking Local, National & World News

NYTimes – Breaking Local, National & World News

The New York Times Company

For news hounds that want the real story.

The New York Times is widely considered one of the most prestigious names in news, which makes its iPhone app a must-have. Non-subscribers are limited to viewing “top news,” but that covers a wide range and the rest of the app’s functionality, including push notifications, is intact. Articles are well-formatted and load quickly, but the use of an animated banner ad in the bottom of the screen (even for subscribers and occasionally in full screen mode) detracts from the reading experience.

Why we love it

In a world full of fake news, it's good to know some places still value journalistic ethics. Not every story is correct, but they've all been vetted by trained journalists and top-tier editorial teams. If you want the real story, the NYT is one of the best.

Financial News

Keep track of markets, business news, and more with these apps.

MarketWatch - Financial news + stock market data

MarketWatch - Financial news + stock market data

Dow Jones & Company, Inc., publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

Although more of a stock tracker, Market Watch can be an excellent source for financial news. The interface is great and the realtime stock graph is especially cool. Another great thing that this app does is display the stocks that have been in the news, which of course helps a potential buyer of a particular stock. Even after paying for this app, there are enough ads to annoy you quite a bit. I think that this is the main downfall of this app, but if you can live with the ads and don't mind paying a few bucks, then give Market Watch a run.

Barron’s – Global Stock Markets & Financial News

Barron’s – Global Stock Markets & Financial News

Dow Jones & Company, Inc., publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

Barron's is well known for its reliability in the financial world. This app proves that with its magazine app optimized for the iPad. Unlike the other apps that report news by the minute, the main focus of Barron's is to report news every Friday. The advantage of this is that the articles are written by the best professionals who often give advice within the article itself. Barron's also has you covered by putting current news in the side when opening the app. Unfortunately, the biggest con of Barrons is the price. At $150 a year for the magazine, this app is geared toward a serious investor and is probably not what an average person wants for financial news.

Flipboard: News For Every Passion

Flip through your news

For those who like a customized news feed.

Flipboard deserves its spot as one of the best known news and content aggregation apps on the iOS platform. The app is beautifully designed, optimized for iPhone use, can be connected to most social media accounts, and now even supports podcasts and music via an in-app player. Flipboard’s true power lies in its content catalog, which includes many of the biggest names in blogs and news, any website with an RSS feed or Twitter account, and, most importantly, content chosen by Flipboard staff and other interesting personalities. These curated topics are similar to sections in a newspaper, but they combine information from many different sources— it is essentially a folder in an RSS reader, only you don’t have to create it. More, Flipboard continually updates its catalog and creates new curated topics for timely events; for example, in March, I used Flipboard’s NCAA March Madness section to help fill out my bracket. The app is very responsive, but lacks a list or headline-only view, which is likely to disappoint those who want a quick overview of current news. Although there is room for improvement (e.g., the ability to add more sources to your flipboard), Flipboard is still a top option for news reading on the iPhone.

Why we love it

Flipboard offers a super nice, customizable interface. View categories in a tiled layout, search by keyword, follow friends, and receive shared stories from other users. Flipboard is perfect when you want to get serious about tailoring your news interests.

Technology News

Keeping track of the technology world is much easier with these great apps.

AppAdvice

AppAdvice

AppAdvice.com

Is this shameless? Yes. Is it true? Also yes. The AppAdvice app is by far the best place to go to find app news and advice. Although it is heavy on the application side, the site does still post more then its fair share of Apple-related headline news. In terms of app usability, its UI really shines through. They didn't just shove out a glorified reader for the iPhone (note some of the apps here), it really is another experience consuming AppAdvice on your mobile device rather then your desktop. Especially with its price drops, app movers and app updates links. Hey, I work for them and could get it for free, but I even paid for it. It's that good. Ok, now onto the non-affiliated apps!

TWiT

TWiT

ShiftKeySoftware

Leo Laporte has one of the best networks going with TwiT. I am plugging his app here as notable because he runs two or three podcasts in which Apple is the key focus. "Mac Break Weekly" is all Apple, "This week in Tech" is heavy on the Apple side and even "This Week In Google" gets a few apple plugs because of the battle of Android vs iOS. The sheer amount of podcasts, and the fact that a live stream is going 24/7 makes this any tech junkie's (and especially Apple Stalker's) dream come true.
