College Apps to Make Your School Life Easier

Getting through college is hard enough, so we've put together our favorite college apps that can help, both inside the classroom, and out!

Manage Your Documents

Whether you need to create, share, scan, or just read a document, these handy apps are just what you need.

Scanner for Me: Scan documents

Scanner for Me: Scan documents

Apalon Apps

For those who want to scan, print, and manage documents with their iOS device.

Using only your iPhone or iPad you can instantly scan and print any written, printed or graphic material, including: contracts for your partners or clients; business cards; receipts to track your expenses; paper notes and mindmaps to save the best ideas for future reference; book pages and articles for further reading and analysis; texts that don't offer a digital copy; or any other multipage document for different purposes.

Scanner Pro

Turn your iOS device into a precise, high-quality pocket scanner.

Scanner Pro

Scan

For anyone who dislikes dealing with paper and encounters it left, right, and center.

Scanner Pro allows you to easily scan documents, receipts, tickets, and more using your iOS device’s camera, with automatic border detection and shadow removal at that. It then lets you save or share your scans as multi-page PDF or JPEG files.

Why we love it

Scanner Pro wouldn’t have lasted for as long as it has if it didn’t offer and continually expand on a robust feature set for quick and easy mobile scanning. More than merely scanning documents, the app incorporates automatic border detection, shadow removal, distortion correction, optical character recognition, workflow integration, and other technologies to let you do more with the files you care about.

Capture and Keep Your Notes

From taking notes during class to capturing ideas on the go, a reliable note-taking app is a must for college students.

Notability

Notability is a powerful all-in-one note-taking solution.

Notability

Create smart notes on the fly

For those who need a note app that does it all

Notability - Notability's combination of numerous features, an intelligently-designed interface, a fluid, readable handwriting experience, and value is enough to make it unbeatable. Notability has virtually every feature available in other notetaking apps (aside from text conversion) and they are virtually all implemented in a highly intuitive, user-friendly manner: pencil, highlighter, a palm rest that works, a zoom mode that advances the text as you type, a typing mode with extra keys on the keyboard and the ability to type in the body of the note, a voice recording function that syncs recordings to the text typed at the same time, import from and autosync to Dropbox, any WebDAV server, or iDisk, an outline format, the option to turn and use any page in a notebook in Landscape or Portrait mode, pdf annotation, a left handed writing mode, and even the elimination of the need to turn the page by automatically adding a new page at the bottom of the last one. The one hiccup is that it hasn't been updated for the new iPad yet, but the developers have announced that an update is imminent.

Why we love it

Notability has a ton of powerful features and tools to make note-taking a breeze.

Evernote

Evernote changes the way you organize your notes & projects. Even works in iMessage

Evernote

Choose your plan

Looking for a full-service notes app? Look no further than Evernote.

Evernote is free, universal, and an essential app to share audio recordings. Evernote now includes a 90 minute recording limit. The app even allows you to record audio in the background. Evernote can share that audio to anyone through a simple email. The audio will be instantly accessible to you on any one of your computers or devices with Evernote installed. The app also supports background playback of your audio with controls through the multitasking dock If you opt for an Evernote Premium account, you also get great tools like OCR, more storage space every month, and more. The app is simple and effective and if all you need to do is share audio recordings, then this is the app for that.

Why we love it

Evernote is what Apple's Reminder app wants to be when it grows up.

Noteshelf

Take notes, annotate, and multitask on your iPad.

Noteshelf

A plethora of PDF editing tools

For those who want beautiful notes in one place.

Noteshelf has a very smooth, responsive writing engine with little to no lag. More, Noteshelf works so effortlessly that users don't have to exert extra effort or alter their style to create notes that are readable and look like their "normal" handwriting on paper. The interface is cleverly designed and focused on the user's experience; every feature is in the logical position for its use and is implemented in an intelligent fashion (e.g., the palm rest function automatically scrolls down as you write). Noteshelf missed out on top marks by a slim margin, mainly because its handwriting is comparable to Notability, it has fewer features, and it costs more. However, if you need an app with built-in templates for paper types or the ability to use a different template for each page, Noteshelf is the one to get.

Why we love it

Noteshelf is easy to use and provides us with a ton of options for templates. No matter what we need, there will be a template for it.

Get Where You Need to Go

Save yourself the hassle of getting through heavy traffic and then locating a parking spot. With these apps you can check out public transportation or pay someone else do the driving in your college town.

Make Your Plans

Take the guess work out of planning your social events or group project meetings. Discuss details and find out who can participate with a convenient app.

Doodle: Easy Scheduling

Take the pain out of figuring out when everyone is available.

Doodle: Easy Scheduling

Create polls on the go

For anyone trying to get a group of people in the same place at the same time.

Getting multiple people to meet in the same place at the same time can be tough. When you have a group of individuals – whether students or coworkers – who all have varying schedules, it can get even harder. Doodle allows you to easily send a poll to anyone asking them to indicate whether they are available or busy for set time slots, and the best part is that an account is not required for filling out polls. Doodle also offers some advanced features. For starters, you can allow users to select "if need be" times, that way you can make sure everyone is free and that it's convenient for most. Polls can optionally be set as private, so only administrators can view responses, and they can also be used as sign-up systems for events by only allowing users to choose a select amount of options, or to have a maximum number of attendees per time slot. While Doodle has been known to be web-based, the iOS app in particular allows users to create, modify, and respond to polls on the go. The best part is being able to receive notifications for when participants respond. This makes it a must-have for any Doodle user.

Why we love it

Doodle is the easiest way to find out when everyone's available, and also offers the best iOS solution for this that we've found. Being able to keep up with polls in a desktop web browser, along with in the mobile app with push notifications, makes it easy to use while balancing a busy lifestyle.

TimeTree: Shared Calendar

TimeTree: Shared Calendar

JUBILEE WORKS, Inc.

TimeTree: Shared Calendar

For those who want everyone’s schedules on one calendar.

TimeFree allows you to create separate shared calendars for the different roles you have - personal, family, couple, work, even clubs and hobbies. Notifications are delivered automatically to everyone in the group when someone creates or changes an appointment, or sends a message in the app - no need to send direct messages to everyone, or to a group chat only to have people not see it. TimeFree supports import from Google Calendar, so you can use TimeTree immediately. You can also view others’ Google Calendars if you have access. You can use your desktop at work or school and mobile on-the-go.

Why we love it

TimeTree helps you clear up miscommunication and find compromise by sharing information about events with the people in your shared calendar.

All Calendars, LLC

Allcal - Manage events better

For those looking to create interactive real-time calendars.

Allcal lets you create interactive, real-time calendars for your baseball team, nonprofit, book club, and group of friends. You can even share a public calendar of events instantly by creating a public calendar for your business, venue, or school club. Planners can create events of their own with cover photos and real-time updates, or search our public calendars to find fun events to share. The shared calendars make planning easy, keep everybody updated, and even send pop-up notifications of a new event or last-minute change.

Why we love it

It's easy to make plans quickly by searching public calendars for fun events nearby, then adding them directly on your shared calendar.

Budget Your Bucks

Making sure you have enough money for books, tuition, and entertainment does not have to be a chore. A finance and budgeting app is just the ticket to keeping an eye on your cash.

Clarity Money - Budget Planner

Clarity Money - Budget Planner

Clarity Money

Featured by Apple as one 2017’s “New Apps We Love” -- Clarity is your personal financial advocate. Clarity Money uses data science and machine learning to analyze your personal finances and help you make smarter decisions with your money. Seeing is believing!

What else does Clarity Money do for you? Our free app will help you save money, plan your budget, track your spending and expenses, protect your credit score, lower your bills, and manage all of your accounts, in one place. Here’s what else Clarity can do for you:

- Stop unwanted accounts and subscriptions from charging you
- Find you better credit card deals based on your spending habits
- Cancel and lower your bills
- Manage your budget and expenses
- Help you payoff debt
- Create a savings account
- Transfer money between your bank accounts
- Generate your credit score for free

Find out why TechCrunch, Mashable, and Business Insider are talking about Clarity:

“[Clarity] combines a number of the best features of existing money-management apps into a one-stop-shop. The app lets you cancel subscriptions, and suggests how to manage credit (by offering a credit card to consolidate debt and provide the best card for a particular type of consumer). The company also identifies bills that are negotiable and provides a service that automatically renegotiates for a lower rate. Finally, the Clarity Money app also lets users set up a savings account that will automatically withdraw money from a personal account.” - TechCrunch, 2017

“The iOS app is sort of a combination of Mint, which tracks your financial health, and Digit, which saves money in small increments. Clarity asks for your financial information, and from there tracks your spending and suggests ways to save. The app will look out for deals to lower your bills, suggest subscriptions you could cancel and help you save money for specific goals.” - Mashable, 2017

“It uses data science and machine learning to negotiate bills, create a savings account, find lower interest rate credit cards and/or personal loans, transfer money between accounts, and deliver actionable insights based on your spending patterns, credit score and credit cards.” - Business Insider, 2017

“It also trained me to review my transactions daily, a necessary evil in the age of digital spending. I haven’t pulled the trigger on cutting my subscriptions and switching my credit card just yet, but I am seriously considering both.” - Barron’s, 2017

This is what real Clarity Customers say about the app:

“A must-have budget and expense tracking app for people who want to be more conscious of their finances. The ability to cancel subscriptions that are wasting money is pretty amazing. Highly recommended.”

“This app really helps with budgeting and monitoring spending, expenses and debt.”

“Best way to manage your finances. This budget app allows you to stay on top of every transaction while offering keen insight into your spending habits, subscriptions, and debt.”

“An excellent app to track finances and manage debt.”

“I've become obsessed with money, budgeting, and saving. Clarity tells me how much money I've spent, what subscriptions I have, and makes saving and budgeting money easy.”

Daily Budget Original
Daily Budget Original

Daily Budget Original

C Ruttinger

Daily Budget Original takes a different approach to budgeting. When you first open the app, it asks you what your monthly income is, then it’ll tell you how much you have to spend a day based on that alone. After that fun share, it’ll ask you what your expenses are. As you enter them, your daily amount to spend will lower until you are finished entering your expenses. From there, the app will ask you how much you want to save in percentage form, and of course, that bit will be taken away from your daily spending, but it’s all for a better future, isn’t it? Every time you open the app now you’ll be able to add an extra income or input an expense that takes away from your daily balance. One thing that makes this app special is the ability to set up a “Big Spendings” plan by entering the dollar amount and date you’d like to purchase the item. The app will then tell you how much money you’d need to save per day to get that item on time. There are a ton of in-app upgrades available, but for only $4.99 you can upgrade to PRO, which is well worth it.

Finicity Corporation

Mvelopes takes the old, handy method of the envelope system and packs it neatly into an app so that you aren’t having to deal with actual envelopes. The app is crisp and clean and takes the time to walk you through set-up in four easy steps, but can be somewhat confusing initially. There are in-app upgrades available that can get pricey, but when following through with the budget you allow yourself in each envelope, it can be well worth it.

Stay Focused

When it is time to put down your device and concentrate on your work, there are apps that can help you do just that.

Forest by Seekrtech

Reduce procrastination and contribute to nature at the same time.

Forest by Seekrtech

Set an amount of time to focus within

For procrastinators who like games or the environment.

Procrastination is inevitable. You know you should be focusing on something besides your iOS device, but somehow you end up in the Facebook app yet again. Forest hopes to eliminate that distraction with a timer that can be used in a pomodoro-like way, but with an incentive. As long as the app remains open in the foreground while the timer you set counts down, a virtual tree will grow, and you will be awarded coins. The goal is to grow a tree with each timer you set by not exiting the app and, thus, not getting distracted by your phone. Over time, the virtual trees you grow will make up a virtual forest displayed in the app, and you can compete with friends in doing this as well. Finally, coins you gather by focusing can eventually be used to plant trees in the real world once you collect enough.

Why we love it

This app allows users to use timer-based techniques to focus, and actually provides a solid incentive for staying off of your iOS device.

Focus Watch: Focus Timer & Task Manager

Focus Watch: Focus Timer & Task Manager

Andrii Zborovskyi

Focus Watch: Focus Timer & Task Manager

For those who strive for optimal performance.

Focus Watch helps you in planning the tasks you need to accomplish, staying focused on them while running the sessions timer and analysing your progress with insightful charts. Focus Watch perfectly works in background mode, so you can start the timer and switch to any other app - you'll be notified with an alarm when the session ends. It also has AppleWatch support!

Why we love it

It's so easy to track your progress with insightful charts, you can see how many sessions you've spent for any separate task in any given day.
