Disney Infinity for Apple TV appears to be a dead product

Apple TV Gaming

Apple TV gaming might be on the ropes right now, courtesy of a blow by Disney. Disney announced its Infinity 3.0 game for the Apple TV shortly after the set-top box was unveiled, along with a play set and host of figures. Now, however, it appears the company has given up on the product just a few short months after it was released.

The team is currently focusing on the traditional gaming platforms. We are always evaluating and making changes, but there are currently no plans for futher updates to the Apple TV version of the game.

- Disney Infinity Forum Thread

In the Disney Infinity forums, owners of the play set for the fourth-generation Apple TV have noted that newer characters, such as Baloo and the new Battleground figures, will not work with the game. Disney Infinity 3.0 requires an app update for each new figure or play set. Unfortunately, the company has decided to focus on other channels instead of continuing to support the Apple TV version of the game.

Given Disney’s close ties with Apple, this news is very discouraging. Apple TV gaming might not have taken off quite the way I would have liked, but it has been growing in popularity. It’s an amazing platform for games, but there just haven’t been the impressive sales figures for games that I expected. Still, for Disney to kill support for a product that’s barely four months old is almost an insult to customers who have purchased the Infinity play set.
