Instagram's Launching New Tools and Control Features Ahead of the New Year

December 6, 2016

On Tuesday, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom announced four new features for the photo- and video-sharing service under the headline, Keeping Instagram Safe: More Tools and Control.

In the coming weeks, Instagram users with a private account will (finally) have the ability to remove followers. Before this, the only way to remove a follower was to block them.

Going forward, if your account is private, you can remove followers by going to your list of followers and tapping the … menu next to any person’s name. The person will not be notified that you removed them as a follower.

Additionally, Instagram is beefing up what you can do with comments. Firstly, users will soon have the ability to publish posts with comments turned off, for those times when “you want to let your post stand on its own.” You’ll also be available to like comments by tapping a heart icon next to any comment.

Finally, you’ll soon be able to use Instagram to report someone you care about who you feel may be thinking about injuring themselves. This anonymous reporting tool will connect your friend to organizations that offer help.

It’s been a busy year for Instagram, especially in the past few months.

In late November, the Facebook-owned service introduced live video and disappearing direct messages. Three months earlier, Instagram Stories debuted and quickly gaining in popularity.

Each of these changes mentioned here is expected to go online in the coming weeks.
