In the crime drama film “Live by Night,” Ben Affleck plays Joe Coughlin, a bootlegger turned gangster in Prohibition-era Florida. In the movie’s official iOS game, Live by Night – The Chase, you get to play as Coughlin and his associates as they rob banks and evade or take out the police.
Live by Night – The Chase is essentially a blend of behind-the-back runner and third-person shooter. In one mode of the game, you automatically shoot at enemies but you have to steer your vehicle. In another, your vehicle automatically moves as you manually aim and shoot at your pursuers. In both, your objective is one and the same: escape.
After robbing banks, you and your gangster associates must now make your getaway. Evade anyone or anything that gets in your way and take out the police. Your characters automatically shoot the closer you get to their targets, but you have to tap and swipe to steer your vehicle toward safety and escape.
Live by Night - The Chase includes a drive-by shooting mode where you have to open fire at your pursuers yourself as the vehicle automatically moves onward. Just swipe to aim and tap to shoot.
Road to perdition
Live by Night - The Chase features two remarkably rendered environments based on actual locations from the movie: the town and its fringes.
With your hard-earned cash, you can upgrade the health, damage, and reload speed of your vehicle and squad. Upgrading helps you on your way toward taking down the final bank across the game’s three difficulty modes.
Live by Night – The Chase is admittedly far from the best behind-the-back runner or third-person shooter. But as a combination of the two gaming genres, it’s more than a passable option. And as movie tie-in mobile games go, Live by Night – The Chase does a satisfactory job of capturing the mood and setting of the film it’s based on.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, Live by Night – The Chase is available now on the App Store for free, with no in-app purchases.
