First reported by MacRumors, an app developer has apparently spotted references to a next-generation Apple TV and tvOS 11 in their logs.

Firi Games is the developer arcade games including Phoenix HD and Phoenix II. In it’s developer logs, references to “AppleTV6,2” and “tvOS 11” were recently spotted as connecting to play Phoenix HD. The IP addresses correspond to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. The fourth-generation Apple TV is listed as “AppleTV5,3.”

The device identifiers can be faked, but the information lines up with a Bloomberg report from February.

That information said that Apple was developing a new model of the streaming device with an internal name of “J105.” It will apparently be capable of 4K streaming and “more vivid colors.” No other improvements have been leaked.

My colleague Bryan Wolfe, back in January, said that 4K streaming would be one of four great ways to improve the overall Apple TV experience.

Long called a “hobby” Apple made a big splash when introducing the fourth-generation device in October 2015 with the new Siri Remote, true App Store support, and other features. But since then, excitement has stalled as competitors – like Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV – have added 4K streaming and other features.
