The iPhone 3GS: 2009-2012

Apple has confirmed to AllThingsD that the venerable iPhone 3GS has been officially discontinued.
While some believed that the handset might stick around in some type of limited fashion, the handset’s demise isn’t exactly a big surprise. Earlier this month, we reported that Genius Bars across the world received emails saying stocks of the iPhone 3GS were running low.
The handset, originally introduced in summer 2009, steadily moved down the Apple lineup after the introduction of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Since last October, the GSM handset was free after a contract from AT&T.
With the introduction of the iPhone 5 yesterday, the 8GB iPhone 4 is now the no-cost option for buyers. The 16GB iPhone 4S will slip down to $99.
It’s not all bad for 3GS owners, though. They will be able to upgrade their devices to iOS 6, which will be available to download on Wednesday. Even so, not all of the features of the new operating system will be available on the handset.
Are you still using an iPhone 3GS? If so, are you planning to upgrade to an iPhone 5 or one of the less expensive Apple options?
