The Third-Party YouTube Client, McTube, Moves Forward With New Quality
December 5, 2012
Ignited by the removal of an integrated YouTube viewer, the third-party YouTube client market, which includes apps such as Jasmine and McTube, was fueled by the poor attempt of an official YouTube app. Today, McTube takes another great step forward as v2.1 contains an enhanced caching system, more adjustment controls, and other handy new features.
An option not found in many other apps, McTube's video caching system already seemed like a wish come true for the YouTube enthusiast. In v2.1, there's no need to take a break, unless for other reasons, because the caching process continues in the background and automatically resumes. If that weren't enough for the multitasker in you, McTube v2.1 has another great feature, full AirPlay implementation. When utilizing an Apple TV, you'll appreciate the ability to do background playback, allowing the use of other iOS apps while streaming video to the big screen.
Even without the offline viewing capability, the latest version of McTube trumps the YouTube app, including the very recently published universal app version. Using an identical method to the Flash-based YouTube player, viewers can select the video quality of both the video stream and which quality is cached. The default quality value can be set as part of the Playback preference, located within Settings.
To improve navigation and sharing, further changes in v2.1 consist of inserting the Trending category, removing the duplicate Top Favorites category, as well as adding Pull to Refresh, swipe to adjust embedded playback height, and the iOS 6 share menu.
