AppAdvice Game Of The Week For January 11, 2013

January 11, 2013

Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!

Hundreds

Our top game pick for this week is the latest title from a talented pair of developers: Adam Saltsman, creator of Canabalt, and Greg Wohlwend, the guy behind Solipskier and Gasketball. Hundreds is a new puzzle game that will definitely challenge your reflex skills.

The game features a minimal, flat design that seems to be the new trend in iOS apps this year. Even though it’s simple, it still looks great on your Retina screens.

So what is the goal in Hundreds? Each level will ask that you tap a series of circles, all which will have a number in the center of them (starting with zero). You must tap the circles until the total on the level adds up to 100. Sounds incredibly easy, right?

Well, yeah, but there is much more to it than that. Once each circle is tapped, it will turn red and grow. If anything touches them (obstacles or other circles) while they are being tapped, then the level ends.

At first you will start with one circle, but then you will get a bunch of them, and even moving circles, ones that must be tapped simultaneously, and even ones that start with a negative number. The game starts out easy, but the difficulty will ramp up in later levels. It will really test your patience, as well as your reflexes.

There are 100 levels, and you’ll find some cryptic messages sprinkled throughout. These will go together with the Game Center achievements, which is pretty cool.

We just can’t put Hundreds down, and we’re pretty sure that you won’t be able to either! Our own Juli Clover said it is “downright addictive.”

Get Hundreds for your iPhone and iPad in the App Store for $2.99. Don’t miss Clover’s original review here.

Honorable Mention Swing King

In the mood for a physics based puzzle game? Then we’ve got what you want! Swing King from Chillingo is a beautiful one that should not be missed.

The game features beautifully drawn visuals, and character models look fantastic. Heck, the main character kind of looks like the Ice King from Adventure Time, which is pretty great in itself. Environments are lush and gorgeous, and will draw you in to the world where you must rescue the damsel in distress from an evil creature, with just your stretchy arms and trusty steed! The soundtrack is also good stuff.

There are four worlds to go through, with about 20 levels in each, along with a separate boss fight. Each level will have the king dangling from a round, black creature, and you must launch him onto other surfaces so that he can collect the stars and get to his flying unicorn. Boss fights will involve swinging, balancing, and punching the evil creature in the face.

I found the game to be incredibly detailed, and it’s fun and challenging. If you are a fan of Angry Birds, then you will like Swing King (I actually prefer it to the birds).

You can get Swing King for $0.99 for your iPhone and iPad. Don’t forget to check out my original review here.
