Google+ Update Kills The Messenger, Adds Google Drive And Google Apps Support

August 17, 2013
Google has just issued a major update to Google+ for iOS. This new update adds a couple of new features while removing an old one. First off, the latest update to the official iOS app of Google's flagship social networking site adds integration with Google's flagship file storage service, Google Drive. Specifically, following the update, you can now view, edit, and share photos stored in your Google Drive account. Second, the update adds Google Apps domain support, allowing Google Apps domain owners to restrict posts to the domain and to use domain icons to identify members. So, those are the two additions. Now, on to the omission brought about by the update, which has to do with the app's Messenger feature. Simply put, Messenger is no longer included in Google+ for iOS. Instead, Google recommends using the standalone Hangouts app, which now includes Messenger functionality. You may visit Google Takeout if you wish to download your Messenger data. Hangouts itself was previously part of Google+ for iOS. But it has branched out into its very own app since the previous major update to the Google+ app was issued late last May. The new version of Google+ for iOS is available now in the App Store for free. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later.
