Outread Speed-Reading App Gains iPad Support And More Features In First Major Update

February 22, 2014

Outread, the app that highlights chunks of text rather than flashing words in order to improve your reading speed, has just received its first major update.

Released just over a month ago, Outread previously received a couple of updates, albeit minor ones only. The first one added better URL scheme support for advanced users, and the second added support for Background App Refresh, Dynamic Type, and OpenDyslexic font.

This time, the latest update to Outread is a major one in that, most significantly, it brings universal support to the app. That means that Outread is now natively compatible with iPad and iPad mini as well as with iPhone and iPod touch.

The new update also adds a new speed-reading mode that works by dimming nonessential parts of the text. It also brings improved AirDrop-enabled sharing of articles and adds support for opening .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt, and Pages documents.

The latest update to Outread also delivers the following improvements:

  • Favorite articles from the activity menu
  • Long press on the article’s cell on the list to show available actions
  • Highlighter’s contrast adjustment
  • Scrolling to the next page is now a little less disruptive
  • Improved Dynamic Type support
  • Various optimizations, so the app should be more responsive now

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later, the new universal version of Outread is available now in the App Store as a free update or as a new $2.99 download.

For more information on Outread, check out original review of the app here on AppAdvice, which concludes: “Given Outread's better take on rapid serial visual presentation, along with its clean and evidently functional design and user interface, the app is a clear winner in the speed-reading category.”
