Britain's Biggest 4G Carrier Unveils New Price Plans

March 26, 2014

Over in Britain, carrier EE has unveiled a handful of new 4G LTE price plans. The new plans start at £13.99 per month and provide access to EE’s ever-growing 4G LTE network, which is currently the largest network of its kind operating in the British Isles.

The £13.99 plan offers customers unlimited texts, 500 minutes of calls, and 500 MB of 4G data, and subscribers will need to sign-up to a two-year agreement in order to take advantage of the new price plan.

Compared with EE’s previous offering it's a better deal; the carrier isn’t shying away from promoting this, either, calling the price of its new entry-level 4G plan “less than the cost of a pint of milk a day.” Though it is worth noting that rival carrier 3 is offering its own limited-coverage 4G LTE plans from £12.90, and O2 has similar plans which lock customers in for 12 months, rather than 24.

For £18.99 per month, EE customers can enjoy 1,000 minutes and 1 GB of 4G data, and a fee of £23.99 or £29.99 per month provides users with unlimited messaging, unlimited minutes, and either 2 GB or 5 GB of cellular data. All three plans also offer users a free handset, either the Alcatel Idol S or the recently announced EE Kestrel, for no upfront cost.

The Kestrel is EE’s own attempt to bring a low-cost smartphone to the British market. It features a 4.5-inch qHD display, 8 GB of internal storage, and a 5 MP rear-facing camera; PAYG customers can purchase the model for a £99.99 fee.

Though of course, unlocked iPhone owners can bring their own handset to EE in order to take advantage of the carrier’s new lower-priced plans, too.

EE launched its 4G LTE network in Britain back in October 2012, and since then the carrier has expanded its coverage to include countless more towns and cities across the country. At present, EE has some 28 million customers on its books, though over the past year it’s faced increasing competition from rival carriers in Britain, each of which has launched its own 4G LTE network.

Customers will be able to pick up one of the new plans from EE’s online store, however as of this writing the website is suffering an outage that’s reportedly been going on since 10 p.m. GMT last night. We’ve reached out to the carrier but have yet to hear back.
