The new Philips Hue Lux lighting system is now available to preorder

August 15, 2014

First unveiled back in March, buyers can now preorder the Philips Hue Lux lighting system.

Lux is a white-light only version of the colorful, and more expensive, Hue system. The LED lamps can still be controlled from any iOS device, even where you are away from home.

Here’s a quick video that shows the bulbs in action. Click here if you can’t see it.

The starter kit, which includes two bulbs and a bridge, can be preordered from Apple’s Online Store or Amazon.com for $99.99. Additional bulbs can be purchased separately for $29.99 each.

Orders are expected to arrive in late September.

While the Hue system, and its 16 million possible colors, is really fun to use, I can see the new Hue Lux appealing to even more users with its lower price tag.

Earlier this week, the free and universal companion app received a nice update to version 1.5. Along with improved support for the Lux bulbs, it features a number of UI improvements. It also now highlights some nice third-party apps compatible with the bulbs.
