With nearly 5 million shipments in Q3 2014, Apple is now the No. 5 PC vendor in the world

October 9, 2014

Apple is now the fifth largest PC vendor in the world, according to new preliminary data published by IDC (via MacRumors).

In the third quarter of 2014, Apple’s share of the worldwide PC market rose to 6.3 percent. Apple shipped almost 5 million units in the quarter in question, amounting to a 8.9 percent increase over its shipments from the year-ago quarter. This was enough to help the Mac device maker displace ASUS from the fifth position among the top PC vendors in the world.

Lenovo was the top global PC vendor with 15.7 million shipments equivalent to 20 percent market share, followed by HP, Dell, and Acer.

In the U.S., Apple held its top three PC vendor position with more than 2.2 million shipments and 13 percent market share, a 9.3 percent growth over a year ago. It’s outperformed by HP at the top spot, with more than 4.8 million shipments and 27.7 percent market share, and Dell at the number two position, with more than 4.1 million shipments and 24 percent market share.

As noted by IDC, Apple’s growth in the PC market has been largely on account of its “recent price cuts and improved demand in mature markets.”

Apple is expected to launch new Mac devices alongside next-generation iPad models at its special media event on Thursday, Oct. 16.
