Nest Learning Thermostat update will bring enhanced auto-scheduling and more

November 4, 2014

A firmware update for the popular Nest Learning Thermostat has begun to filter out to users with a trio of improvements.

The biggest new feature in version 4.3 of the software looks to be an enhanced auto-schedule feature. Nest says the functionality can help you save up to 6 percent more on heating and cooling bills by learning new schedules and adapting to changes more quickly.

Quick View will answer a big customer request. Nest explains more about how that feature works in a blog post:

Push the ring once and you’ll see weather, outdoor temp and humidity. Turn the ring and you’ll see a quick summary of everything you need to know, like how much energy you used yesterday or what’s next on your schedule. Instead of having to scroll through settings and menus, all the info you need for the day will be right on the display.

Finally, System Test will help users make sure their equipment is functioning without any issues. After turning on the heating or air conditioning, the Nest will run a basic system check to help spot and solve any issues. The Nest iOS app will receive an update this week to help support that feature.

The thermostat was the first smart home product from Nest. After introducing the Protect carbon monoxide/smoke detector more than a year ago, the company was purchased by Google for $3.2 billion in January.

Since then, Nest itself has also made a pair of key acquisitions – security camera maker Dropcam and most recently smart home hub company Revolv.
