Facebook introduces a new Place Tips feature to combat Foursquare and Yelp

Facebook is adding a great feature to the iPhone version of its hugely popular app. Starting today, users will be able to view Place Tips on the top of their News Feed while out on the town.

When you see the Place Tips in your feed, clicking on them will show a series of cards with information like posts and photos your friends have shared about the location. Users can also see other information from the place including its own Facebook page, popular menu items, and upcoming events.

Here’s a quick promo video about the feature. Click here if you can’t see it.

The Facebook app is universal for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad/iPad mini. It can be downloaded now on the App Store for free.

More information about Place Tips can be found here. Thankfully, you can turn the feature off at any time if you don’t find it useful. Also, they will only appear if you give the app specific permission to access the location of your phone.

I think the Place Tips feature definitely sounds like a good idea, and could easily take some steam away from competitors with similar offerings like Foursquare and Yelp. And it is yet another way for Facebook to keep you glued to the app, if it hasn’t already taken over your life already.

As for me, I’ll be sticking with Facebook’s Paper app. It just received a handy update yesterday, and is completely ad free.
