This new iOS app uses timelines to put today's news in context

For all the plenitude of news coverage out there, there’s something notably lacking: context. Fortunately, Timeline is here to provide just that.

Timeline is a brand new news app for iOS. But it’s not just another Flipboard, Circa, or Yahoo News Digest. Rather, it’s a news app sub-genre unto itself as it provides a unique historical perspective on current news presented, as its name suggests, in a timeline.

Each timeline is put together by Timeline’s editorial team in such a way that it connects the news at present to relevant topics and attitudes from the past.

For example, today’s front page of Timeline includes a timeline for the hot-button issue of the massacre that occurred at the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France, on Jan. 7. Titled “How Depicting the Prophet Became a Problem,” the timeline gives the issue historical context that dates all the way back to the dawn of Islam in the year 632.

Timeline boasts an intuitive and immersive user interface. It allows for discovery of stories by news category, bookmarking of favorite timelines, and sharing of timelines via Facebook, Twitter, email, and text.

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 8.0 or later, and already enhanced with full resolution support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Timeline is available now on the App Store for free.

Go ahead and check it out if you’d like a more contextual and meaningful take on today’s news instead of, say, using a news app that’s all style and summarization and no substance.
