Grim Fandango, the classic dark comedy neo-noir adventure game originally released in 1998, has been brought back to life in a new “Remastered” version that’s out now on iOS.

First released for desktop and console last January, Grim Fandango Remastered is now playable on iPhone and iPad.

Of course, Grim Fandango Remastered features the storyline of the original, which is inspired by Mexican folklore and film noir. Just like the original, the new version lets you experience the life (or death) of Manny Calavera:

Something’s rotten in the land of the dead, and you’re being played for a sucker. Meet Manny Calavera, travel agent at the Department of Death. He sells luxury packages to souls on their four-year journey to eternal rest. But there’s trouble in paradise. Help Manny untangle himself from a conspiracy that threatens his very salvation.

But as the “Remastered” part in its name suggests, the new version of Grim Fandango offers certain refinements over the original, particularly in light of the modern platforms and devices it’s on. These include repainted characters with high-resolution textures, dynamic lighting, and a soundtrack featuring the game’s classic score rerecorded with a live orchestra.

Grim Fandango Remastered also offers bonus content including a concept art browser and exclusive developer commentary.

Compatible with iPhone and iPad running iOS 8.0 or later, Grim Fandango Remastered is available now on the App Store for $9.99.

Grim Fandango Remastered is published by Double Fine Productions in partnership with LucasArts, the publisher of the original game.

Recently, Double Fine released the second act of the acclaimed point-and-click adventure game Broken Age, which, as it happens, is designed by the project leader of Grim Fandango, Tim Schafer.
