July 1, 2015

Apple’s highly anticipated music streaming service launched on iOS earlier today through an update to the Music app that came with the release of iOS 8.4. Now, Apple Music, as the service is simply called, has also arrived on Mac with the release of iTunes 12.2.

iTunes now playing Apple Music

Indeed, the latest update to Apple’s media center desktop application, which now sports a colorful new icon, adds support for Apple Music.

This includes the service’s subscription-based on-demand streaming section, the curated Internet radio station Beats 1, and Connect, a publishing platform enabling artists to share content with fans. These are accessible through the newly added sections in the Music tab in iTunes, the same as the ones in the newly updated Music app for iOS: For You, New, Radio, and Connect.

I’ve been enjoying Apple Music on the go with my iPhone and iPad, and I look forward to doing the same on my desk with my MacBook.

To get Apple Music on your Mac, update to iTunes 12.2 by going to the Updates tab in the Mac App Store. To get Apple Music on your iOS device, update to iOS 8.4 by going to the Settings app > General > Software Update.

GarageBand integrates with Apple Music

Coinciding with the launch of its new music streaming service, Apple has also updated GarageBand for Mac and iOS with Apple Music integration. On both Mac and iOS editions of the popular music creation app, you can now share content directly to Apple Music Connect for your friends and fans to check out.

On Mac, GarageBand has also been updated with 10 new Drummers, more than 100 EDM and hip-hop synthesizer Patches, 1,000 new Apple Loops, and other enhancements.

GarageBand for Mac and GarageBand for iOS are available for $4.99 each on the Mac App Store and the App Store, respectively.

Software updates beyond Apple Music

Aside from releasing iOS 8.4 and iTunes 12.2 to introduce Apple Music on iOS and Mac, and updating GarageBand for Mac and iOS with Apple Music integration, Apple has just released a handful of other notable software updates.

Also with iOS 8.4, iBooks has been updated with a number of improvements and fixes. Most notable among these is the relocation of audiobooks from the Music app to iBooks, where they’re better suited to be accessed and managed alongside e-books. The e-reading app now also supports finding and preordering books by series.

Apple’s official Mac app for creating e-books, iBooks Author, has also been updated so that books made with the software can now work on iPhone in addition to iPad. New ePub templates have also been introduced in the updated iBooks Author for creating Multi-Touch books with interactive media.

Last but not least, Apple has just updated OS X with the release of OS X Yosemite 10.10.4, which delivers a number of improvements for stability, compatibility, and security.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 is available for free through the Updates tab in the Mac App Store, as is the new version of iBooks Author. As for iBooks, it’s downloadable for free on the App Store.
