Fiery Feeds updated with 3D Touch support and more features

iOS Reading
December 1, 2015

Fiery Feeds, the app that’s touted by its developer as “a feed reader built for power users,” has just received a significant update.

Designed for both iPhone and iPad, Fiery Feeds is a feature-rich alternative to the more popular Reeder or Newsify. It’s a feed reader that syncs with Feedly, Feedbin, Minimal Reader, Feed Wrangler, Fever, Feedja, NewsBlur, AOL Reader, Inoreader, and The Old Reader, with support for multiple accounts.

The app also features integrated sharing via a number of apps and services, and offers support for custom URL actions for sending articles to other apps.

Moreover, it boasts a high-contrast theme and a dark theme in addition to its default theme, and options for customizing the font and colors.

Other features of Fiery Feeds include image previews, keyboard shortcuts, gesture-based quick actions, full-screen reading, and a Today widget.

New features

And with its latest update, Fiery Feeds has gained even more features.

One of these is support for 3D Touch, allowing you to press down on your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus to access shortcuts for different accounts.

There’s also improved interaction with Safari View Controller, support for which was added to Fiery Feeds through the app’s previous update late last October. Now, you can swipe back to dismiss Safari View Controller instead of having to tap Done, and use Safari View Contoller as an option for opening URL actions.

Speaking of URL actions, the new version of Fiery Feeds also includes improvements related to them. First off, there’s a new URL scheme to directly launch Fiery Feeds on a specific account: fiery://openAccount/{account name or number}. There’s also a new URL action directory, and custom URL actions can now be shared with other Fiery users.

Fiery Feeds for iPad

And speaking of sharing, the preview image, if available, is now included when sharing an article.

Plus, on iPad, the app automatically opens the first article only if no other article is open.

Furthermore, the latest update to Fiery Feeds includes the following display improvements

  • Full width images in the article view (if the image is large enough)
  • Separate setting for the text size in the article view
  • Table separator color field in themes
  • Darker table separators in contrast theme

New fixes

It also delivers fixes for the following:

  • No longer shares the article content if using the system share sheet (A lot of sharing exentions can’t handle that much text).
  • Potential crash when selecting a browser
  • Swiping animation when swiping left or right between articles on iOS 9.1
  • Background color in preformated text in articles is now darker in dark themes
  • Some images wouldn’t be cached if the app was terminated while caching
  • Opens the first article automatically on iPad (instead of the second in some cases)
  • Removed Protocol field from URL actions
  • Correctly rotates sharing sheet when the device orientation changes
  • Improved fullscreen image view performance
  • It’s no longer possible swipe back while an image is displayed fullscreen
  • Properly disabled editing of system URL and mail actions
    Larger maximum text size
  • Problem with articles counts (Feed Wrangler)
