Apple: All iPhone 7 Plus Models Are Gone Ahead of Launch Day

If your Friday plans were to stand in line to buy an iPhone 7 Plus, a wiser decision is to stay in bed. Apple has announced that the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus is sold out. This announcement comes just one day before the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus officially launch worldwide.

In a statement, Apple notes:

We couldn’t be happier with the initial response to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and we are looking forward to beginning sales through our retail stores and partners around the world.

Beginning Friday, limited quantities of iPhone 7 in silver, gold, rose gold, and black will be available for walk-in customers at Apple retail stores. During the online pre-order period, initial quantities of iPhone 7 Plus in all finishes and iPhone 7 in jet black sold out and will not be available for walk-in customers. Availability at partner locations for all finishes may vary and we recommend checking directly with them.

Customers can continue to order all models in all colors on apple.com. We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience as we work hard to get the new iPhone into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible.

So there you have it. You can probably buy a 4.7-inch iPhone 7 tomorrow, Sept. 13, at least in matte black, silver, gold, and rose gold. However, you won’t find the handset available in jet black.

For those wanting to make a new iPhone 7 Plus purchase on Friday, forget about it. It’s not going to happen.

As I noted on Sept. 9, the iPhone 7 rollout has been nothing short of a disaster, at least as it relates to expectations.

It’s fairly obvious that Apple had no intention of delivering most iPhone 7 Plus units on launch day. Apple made no direct promises that they would, of course. However, historically there has been an unwritten rule that the early bird gets the worm.

Get in line the night before, get a new iPhone.

Place a preorder early enough, get a new iPhone. 

What Apple should have done is lower expectations and announce two launch days: Sept. 13 for the iPhone 7 and Sept. 27 for the iPhone 7 Plus. That later date is the one many (but not all) iPhone 7 Plus pre-order customers have received as a delivery date.

Complaining about when a new iPhone arrives is admittingly a first world problem. Nonetheless, this is an unforced error that Apple could have avoided.
