IKEA Finally Adds Apple HomeKit Support to Trådfri Smart Lights
It took awhile, but IKEA has finally added Apple HomeKit support to its lineup of Trådfri smart lighting products. The move comes many months after the popular Swedish furniture company first promised the products would support the smart home framework. This news was first uncovered by 9to5Mac.
If you’re a current owner of Trådfri smart bulbs, you can now update your hub firmware and get the latest version of the Trådfri app for the App Store. Once you do, you can generate a HomeKit code for your existing products and add them to the Apple Home app.
The affordable range of lighting products from IKEA was originally announced in March and includes a variety of items including LED bulbs, a motion sensor kit, dimming lights and illuminated panels. At the time, IKEA made no mention of HomeKit support.
However, as Abdel Ibrahim noted in May, IKEA made it clear HomeKit compatibility would be forthcoming:
In the summer and autumn, IKEA takes the next step towards the smart home. With increased functionality, IKEA’s smart lighting range can be used with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant, which means that you can voice-control your lighting.
We believe that smart home technology should be accessible to everyone. For this reason, we will continue to work with our products to be compatible with other products available on the market.
Trådfri products range in price from $11.99 for an E26 LED light bulb to $79.99 for a gateway kit.
