Netflix Is Now on the Apple TV App, but a Key Limitation Remains

Netflix now supports the Apple TV app for iOS and tvOS. However, the support comes with an important restriction.

Thanks to a recent Netflix app update, you can now find TV shows and films on Netflix through Apple’s month-old TV app. However, the support doesn’t include any of Netflix’s original programming, such as “Stranger Things,” “Travelers,” and the recently added “A Series of Unfortunate Events.”

Apple’s TV app announcement in October was noticeable for what was missing, including support for Netflix and Amazon Video.

At the time, Recode explained why Netflix wouldn’t be a partner for Apple’s new app:

Netflix’s refusal to participate will be a blow to the launch of the guide. Netflix has worked with Apple in the past as a Siri voice search partner for Apple TV. But Netflix is also a content producer and could be skeptical of Apple’s plans. The guide concept makes it simpler for users to find Netflix content, but it would also give Apple more power over what shows get promoted.

With the unifying TV app, you can see all the shows and movies you’re watching, find upcoming episodes, view your iTunes titles, and get personalized recommendations on what to watch next.

It’s great to see that most Netflix content now supports the Apple TV app. Still, more is necessary to push the app to another level. At the top of this list should include all of Netflix’s content plus that from Amazon Video.
