Apple's Reported Switch to Custom Mac Chips Could Benefit iOS Devices

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple could be making a big switch away from Intel to custom Mac chips. Apple currently designs custom chips for iOS devices.

The switch could happen as early as 2020, according to the report:

The initiative, code named Kalamata, is still in the early developmental stages, but comes as part of a larger strategy to make all of Apple’s devices — including Macs, iPhones, and iPads — work more similarly and seamlessly together, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The project, which executives have approved, will likely result in a multi-step transition.

Interestingly, we could see a major step toward that goal this summer with the introduction of iOS 12 and macOS 10.14. A report in late 2017 said that developers could be able to create a single app for both iOS devices and the Mac.
