Google Play Newsstand Update Brings Personalized Stories
Amid talks of the apparent influence that the all but unchecked dissemination of fake news had in this year’s notoriously contentious U.S. presidential election, Google has issued a major update to Google Play Newsstand that effectively revamps the service.
Formerly called Google Currents, Google Play Newsstand is an app that competes with Apple News and Facebook in delivering personalized news from various free and premium sources, including top magazines and specialized publications.
With its latest update, which brings the app to version 4.0, Google Play Newsstand has been enhanced with a more personalized and engaging news-reader experience.
Personalized stories
Google Play Newsstand lets you quickly catch up with the latest stories that matter to you with a personalized news briefing, including world headlines, local news, and personal interests. And below the briefing, you can find a stream of AI-powered recommendations, each of which is accompanied by a succinct explanation as to why it’s included and an option for providing feedback (allowing you to control which topics and sources appear in your feed). You can find both the personalized briefing and the recommendation stream in the For You tab. Navigate the app easily with its three other navigation tabs: Library (containing your favorite topics, sources, and magazines), Explore (featuring different categories), and Read Later (showing the stories you’ve saved for reading later).
Rich multimedia
Google Play Newsstand supports multimedia content powered by Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) web optimization framework. It boasts smooth scrolling with auto-play videos and full-bleed images, and presents stories and topics in a lively manner.
Google Play Newsstand 4.0 is available now on the App Store for free.
