Apple Supplier Says at Least One New iPhone Will be Waterproof, Feature Wireless Charging

A major Apple supplier has confirmed that at least one new iPhone model released this year, more than likely the 5.5-inch “iPhone 7s Plus” will feature wireless charging and be waterproof. That’s according to a new report from the Nikkei Asian Review.

Robert Hwang, Wistron CEO let the new slip after a recent meeting:

“Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit,” Hwang told reporters after the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting on Wednesday.

Though smaller than longtime Apple partner Foxconn, Wistron will reportedly split orders for the 5.5-inch iPhone with the more well-known supplier.

While wireless charging has been a rumored feature for all three new iPhones set to be released this year, including the smaller 4.7-inch “iPhone 7s” and the high-end “iPhone 8,” we haven’t heard much more information regarding Hwang’s “waterproof” claim. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are both splash- and water-resistant with an IP-67 rating. But Apple doesn’t cover any water damage under warranty.
