Telltale Is Taking on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Back in April 2015, Telltale announced that it had forged a partnership with Marvel. Now, one year and eight months later, the acclaimed game developer has finally revealed something significant about its collaboration with the blockbuster entertainment company. As it turns out, and as has been speculated by many, Telltale is working on a game based on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Of course, typical of a Telltale title, the project, called Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, will be an interactive episodic game of choice and consequence. But specific to it, the game will have players taking on multiple roles within the titular motley crew of renegade heroes, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot.
The energizing blend of humor, emotion, teamwork, and full-on sci-fi action-adventure of the Guardians provides an enormously satisfying space to explore through Telltale’s unique style of interactive storytelling.
- Kevin Bruner, cofounder and CEO of Telltale GamesWhat’s more, the game will feature a character-driven narrative especially developed for the game, i.e., an original story that’s not based largely on any previous material, presumably not even on the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” film nor on its upcoming sequel, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
With story at the core of everything that Marvel creates, who better to team with than master storytellers Telltale Games.
- Jay Ong, senior vice president of games and innovation at Marvel Entertainment.Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series will consist of five episodes, with the first one expected to come out when the game is released on console, computer and mobile platforms (undoubtedly including iOS) in 2017, most likely coinciding with the theatrical premiere of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” in May.
With specific details about “Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series” being scarce at the moment, its newly posted teaser is understandably no more than that — a teaser. However, in just under a minute, the teaser is rather effective in conveying the prospect of the game’s staying true to the playful tone that has become associated with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. Take a look:
Aside from Marvel, Telltale is also engaged in a partnership with DC on Batman – The Telltale Series, which was launched in September. Unlike the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, that game has a decidedly somber mood befitting its titular character.
