And they’re here. In keeping with its annual tradition, Apple has revealed what it considers are the best apps and games of 2016. Which ones made the cut this year?
Best Apps of the Year
For iPhone, Apple has chosen the art filter app Prisma as the best app of 2016, with the live face-transforming app MSQRD (which was acquired by Facebook earlier this year) as the runner-up. Here are the 10 best iPhone apps of the year, according to Apple’s App Store editorial team:
For iPad, Apple has hailed Autodesk’s illustration app Sketchbook Motion as the very best of 2016, with the runner-up being the recently released writing app Bear. Below are Apple’s picks for the 10 best iPad apps of the year:
Best Games of the Year
Sorry, Pokémon Go, but Supercell’s freemium mobile strategy game Clash Royale is Apple’s choice for the best iPhone game of 2016, with the swipe-based monarchy game Reigns as the runner-up. The wildly popular augmented-reality game is not even one of the games rounding up Apple’s list of the 10 best iPhone games of the year:
However, Pokémon Go gets a special mention from Apple as the “breakout hit” of the year.
Severed, a swipe-based combat puzzler featuring severed limbs, is Apple’s pick for the best iPad game of the year, with the runner-up being the autorunner Chameleon Run. The following are Apple’s best iPad games of the year:
App Store highlights
In addition to choosing the best apps and games of the year overall, Apple’s App Store editorial team has also come up with lists highlighting some noteworthy apps and games across different categories: games playable on one hand, card-based games, celebrity games and apps, video apps, voxel-based games, tap-based games, productivity apps, shopping apps, indie apps and games, and coding apps.
Top of the charts
Finally, Apple has also unveiled the most downloaded and lucrative titles, that is, the apps and games that dominate the App Store’s top free, paid and grossing charts for 2016.
For iPhone, Snapchat is the top free app while Heads Up! is the top paid.
For iPad, YouTube and Minecraft: Pocket Edition are the top free and the top paid, respectively.
