Indulge In The New Food & Drink Category In The App Store

July 13, 2012
Early this month, Apple, through an email sent to iOS developers, effectively announced the introduction of a "Food & Drink" App Store category "in the next few weeks." Well, it appears that the tail end of that time frame has transpired. As noted by 9to5Mac, the new category has already made its way to the App Store. The contents of the Food & Drink category are consistent with Apple's description in its email, as previously recounted by MacStories:
According to Apple, the new category will include “apps that help users cook and bake, mix drinks, manage recipes, find new restaurants and bars, and learn what their friends like to eat and drink.” Food & Drink won’t include diet, grocery shopping, coupon clipping, or food-related game apps.
Sure enough, among the apps listed in the category's "Popular" section are restaurant- and recipe-related apps such as Urbanspoon, Starbucks, Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner, and Pizza Hut. Apparently, most of the apps that populate the new category used to be included in either the Lifestyle or the Travel category. A few months ago, Apple migrated plenty of retail catalog apps into a new "Catalogs" category. Then, last month, it revealed a revamped version of the App Store app on iOS 6. It has also hinted at better search algorithms governing the App Store, supposedly powered by Chomp, which it acquired last February. It's pretty clear that the inclusion of the Food & Drink category is just the latest in a succession of housekeeping moves being done by Apple to its very lucrative App Store.
