Lights, Camera, Acquisition! Vimeo Buys Acclaimed Video Creation App Cameo

March 18, 2014
Vimeo has acquired Cameo, the highly rated video creation app developed by Fast Society and released just last October. Re/code has the story:
Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor isn’t releasing financial details, so it’s easy to assume this is a relatively standard “acquhire” deal, though Trainor says that’s not the case. All 14 of the company’s employees are supposed to go to work at Vimeo, and Trainor says Vimeo will keep running Cameo as a standalone app ...
In February last year, Vimeo also maintained the availability of Echograph after it acquired the GIF-making app. As with Echograph, Vimeo is expected to leverage Cameo to further take on Twitter's Vine and, to a lesser extent, Facebook's Instagram. Cameo lets users create short videos with professional-grade effects and styles, with the ability to shoot with others in real time. In our original review, we noted: "Cameo is a pretty fun little app if you’re into creating videos to share with others. The collaborating feature with friends is definitely one advantage that this has over others, and it adds a fresh new spin on mobile video creation." Subsequently, Cameo was given an AppAdvice App of the Week honorable mention. It also went on to be hailed as one of the App Store's Best of 2013. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later, Cameo is available in the App Store for free.
