Messaging giant Skype has just announced a big update to its iPhone app. Arriving sometime next week, version 5.0 was rewritten from the ground up and features a rethought UI and much more.
Along with being more than five times faster than previous versions, the animations and other visual elements are much smoother. Here’s more from a Skype blog post:
As you swipe from conversations through to your favorites and then back to your contacts lists, you’ll notice how smooth scrolling and transitioning from screen to screen is – with delightful little pops and animations punctuating them. All without degrading the performance and battery improvements we worked so hard to achieve. Here’s a promo video showing the update. Click here if you can’t see it. Users of the app will also be able to start group chats from the hub. And when a message or photo is sent to someone who is offline, they will see the information on their return. Finally, notifications are becoming smarter. If a message is read on a non-iOS device, it will be marked as read on the iPhone version of the app. Skype for iPhone can be downloaded now for free on the App Store. The iPad version of the app will receive a similar revamp “soon.” While I don’t use Skype as much as FaceTime, I’m glad to see the app get such a nice redesign, especially with Apple adding many interesting new features into Messages in iOS 8.
