Who needs words when Facebook now lets you comment with stickers?

October 14, 2014

The inevitable has happened: Stickers have come to Facebook comments.

That’s right. Those glorified and magnified emoticons that we’re in the habit of using when words fail us and even when they don’t are now available in comments as well as messages on Facebook.

The new feature works just as its corresponding feature does in Facebook Messenger. Now, when commenting on a post on the social network, whether on its desktop and mobile Web versions or its iOS and Android apps, you can tap the new smiley icon in the comment field to pick a sticker to accompany or itself constitute your comment.

“I think stickers will allow people to reply to a variety of posts in a more fun way than words alone,” says Facebook engineer Bob Baldwin. “You can now easily show your excitement for a post with good news, cheer up a friend who’s feeling down, and express a variety of more nuanced reactions.”

Sticker support in comments comes to Facebook for iOS by way of a backend update. So an update to the app need not be downloaded from the App Store for you to start getting sticky with it on your iOS device.
