Apple takes us behind the scenes of its holiday-themed ad, 'The Song'

December 18, 2014

Apple has just shared a new video showing the making of its recently released holiday-themed TV ad.

Titled “The Song,” the ad tugs heartstrings by showing a young woman’s time-transcending gift to her grandmother: a rendition of the popular jazz standard “Love is Here to Stay” recorded by the latter in 1952 for her war-bound husband and remixed by the former in the present using her MacBook, iPhone and iPad. Apple’s newly posted video, titled “The story behind ‘The Song,’” offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the ad was produced. In doing so, it effectively draws some parallels between the Voice-O-Graph recording booth of yore and the GarageBand recording app of today.

“Whether it’s making a record in a booth for someone thousands of miles away, or a song in GarageBand for someone you love,” Apple notes in the video’s description, “it’s not just the tools that count, it’s the thought behind the gift.” Take a look:

Last year, Apple released a similarly heartwarming holiday TV ad for iPhone 5s titled “Misunderstood,” which went on to win a Creative Arts Emmy award for Outstanding Commercial earlier this year.
