WeChat updated with share extension, storage manager and other new features

December 21, 2014

So far this month, Israel’s Viber has expanded its platform to integrate with mobile games, Japan’s Line has rolled out support for its own mobile payment service, and South Korea’s KakaoTalk has introduced end-to-end encryption. Not to be outdone, China’s WeChat has just released an update to its popular messaging app for iOS.

The latest update to WeChat for iOS delivers several notable improvements.

Most notably for users of devices running iOS 8, the update adds support for sharing content to WeChat directly from Photos or Safari via the app’s new share extension.

The update also lets you minimize video or voice calls so that you can use the app’s other features while taking a call. It also adds a new Light Boost feature to help in better capturing Vine-like Sight videos at low light.

Moreover, in the new version of WeChat, you can now adjust a global setting for text in the app, and view how much storage space the app is using and free up space if need be.

WeChat is available on the App Store for free. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later.

WeChat was updated last month with full resolution support for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Earlier this week, WeChat’s parent company, the Chinese Internet company Tencent, updated the WeChat-connected personalized emoji sticker app MojiMe with new holiday content and support for sharing to QQ, Weibo, and WhatsApp.
