Periscope now lets users filter streams by location
Periscope, Twitter’s live broadcasting app for iPhone, has received an update adding a smart, new feature.
As of the app’s 1.1 release, Periscope, which is available free of charge on the App Store, allows users to find live streams from around the world using an interactive (and zoomable) map. For instance, you might be interested in finding streams from Paris, or London, or Berlin. Using Periscope 1.1, this can be configured with a few taps, making it easier than ever for iPhone owners to find the exact kind of stream they’re looking for.
Besides support for location-based discovery, Periscope 1.1 also adds “instant replays.” You see, in the updated application, replays are instantly available for iPhone owners to view; you’ll no longer need to wait for a broadcast to upload after it’s finished.
Finally, apart from bug fixes, improvements, and localization for additional countries, Periscope 1.1 also allows users to share a link to the broadcast they’re currently viewing to Twitter. Here’s a complete list of changes made in version 1.1 of the app, as outlined in Periscope’s release notes:
- New ‘Map’ section added to Periscope which lets you explore live broadcasts from around the world on a zoomable map. Tap ‘Map’ from the ‘Global’ section to access a live view of top location-enabled broadcasts from around the world.
- Replays are now instantly available – no need to wait for a replay to upload after broadcasting (you may still delete a replay from the ‘Home’ feed).
- You can now share the link to a broadcast you’re watching on Twitter.
- Periscope is now localized in 29 languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Korean, Russian, Turkish, Portuguese, Dutch, Indonesian, Simplified Chinese, Danish, Finnish, Polish, Norwegian, Swedish, Thai, Arabic, Czech, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Malay, Romanian, Traditional Chinese, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.
Periscope first launched on the App Store back in March, and it came after a rival application, Meerkat, made its first appearance on iOS earlier that month. Both applications allow iPhone owners to broadcast live video to their Twitter feeds; viewers can watch videos, as well as comment on live broadcasts from an iOS device.
Twitter’s Periscope received an update in April making it easier to see when friends are broadcasting, and a further update in the same month added enhanced discovery. Finally, broadcast history made it to Periscope towards the end of April, and an update to Twitter’s own iOS app allowed folks to sign-up to its Periscope service.
This latest update means Periscope is now better than ever. As mentioned, Periscope can be downloaded free of charge on the App Store, and it’s optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch.
