Amazon's ComiXology now lets you read comics from your Kindle library

iOS Reading
December 6, 2015

Comics, the official iOS app of the popular cloud-based digital comics platform ComiXology, has just been updated with a couple of notable changes, with the more noteworthy one being its integration with Amazon accounts.

Amazon account integration

If you’ll recall, ComiXology was acquired by Amazon in April last year. But for some reason, it’s only now that ComiXology has updated its branding with a statement saying that it’s “an Amazon company.”

In line with that, ComiXology has also updated its official Comics app for iOS to offer integration with Amazon accounts. As a result, you can now choose to sign in to the app with your Amazon account or merge your existing ComiXology account with your Amazon account.

ComiXology Amazon sign-in

Signing in or merging with your Amazon account then enables you to read the Kindle comics, graphic novels and manga you’ve purchased right within Comics, with support for ComiXology’s signature cinematic Guided View experience.

Note that after merging, only the comics, graphics novels, and manga in your Kindle library will be made available in your ComiXology collection. That is, the merging doesn’t work the other way around as your ComiXology purchases won’t be made available in your Kindle library.

According to ComiXology, many future features will depend on the use of Amazon accounts. “This is the first step toward using only Amazon accounts to sign in, which will allow us to use even more Amazon muscle to the benefit of ComiXology customers,” the company notes. “At some point in the future, the only way to sign in to ComiXology will be with your Amazon account.”

3D Touch support

In addition to Amazon account integration, the latest update to Comics introduces 3D Touch support. This allows you to press down on the app’s icon on the home screen of your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus to access quick shortcuts to the app’s Smart Lists, My Books and Search sections.

The update also fixes a bug affecting the refreshing of the Recently Purchased list and delivers some other minor improvements.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later, Comics is available on the App Store for free. It offers no in-app purchases for downloading comics; instead, it requires that titles be bought directly from ComiXology’s website first before they can be read in the app.
